Lahaina's last burn Poster: a complexity map

This project addresses the wicked problem (complex and unsolvable) of the 2023 Lahaina, Maui wildfire. I was assigned to design a complexity map that distills key information into a clear and digestible format for viewers. At the heart of the design is Lahaina’s iconic banyan tree, a symbol of the town’s history. It serves as the foundation for the information, with its lower limbs beginning to burn, mirroring the destruction caused by the wildfire. A tone-on-tone blue color scheme enhances the visibility of both the hand-drawn tree and the overlaid information, ensuring they are equally appreciated. To emphasize critical statistics and key points, I incorporated a bold pop of orange. Additionally, in the upper corners, two feedback loops illustrate interconnected aspects of the complexity map, further highlighting the intricate relationships within the crisis.
